Canadian skies turned into a theater for nature's wrath. Three major provinces—Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario—experienced a series of powerful thunderstorms accompanied by hail, high winds, and localized flooding. In Alberta, the first storm arrived in mid-August. Clear skies turned dark in a matter of minutes. Cumulonimbus clouds rolled in from the west, bringing lightning that struck power lines and ancient trees. Hail began to fall, initially pea-sized, then growing to three-centimeter-diameter chunks. The sound of hail hitting rooftops and vehicles sounded like bullets hitting steel. Saskatchewan was not spared the wrath of the weather. On August 10 and 12, two waves of storms struck Regina and Saskatoon. In Regina, strong winds reached 90 kilometers per hour, knocking down large trees and power lines. Hail struck homes and vehicles, causing power outages to more than 30,000 homes. Ontario, Canada's most populous province, experienced thunderstorms and hail on August 13th. In Toronto, marble-sized hailstones struck downtown, damaging shop windows, vehicles, and public facilities. Rainfall reached 69 millimeters in six hours, causing flooding on major roads and disrupting transportation systems. GO Transit trains and TTC services experienced significant delays, and several stations were temporarily closed. In Ottawa, the ByWard Market and Vanier areas experienced localized flooding, forcing residents to evacuate to temporary shelters.
