Evolution of Shanghai | Fixed Camera | 3000 BCE to 2026 CE

This is a work of historical imagination. Not a documentary. Not an academic reconstruction. A creative attempt to feel what 5,000 years of history in one place might have looked and felt like.

I am not Chinese. I do not claim expertise in Chinese history or culture. I am someone who became fascinated by the extraordinary story of this region and wanted to try to visualize it. I have done my best to research every period shown — but I have certainly made mistakes, and I take full responsibility for them.

Specific things I know are imperfect:

— AI image generation cannot perfectly recreate historical clothing, architecture, or facial features. What you see is an interpretation, not a precise reconstruction.
— The timeline compresses thousands of years into minutes. Entire centuries, entire dynasties, entire communities of people are represented by a single image. This is inherently reductive.
— Sensitive historical periods — particularly the Japanese occupation, the Communist era, and the Cultural Revolution — are depicted briefly and can only scratch the surface of their complexity and human cost.

The location shown in this video is fictional — inspired by but not depicting any real address in Shanghai.

The history of the Shanghai region spans more than 5,000 years and involves the stories of millions of people whose lives cannot be adequately represented in any short video.

This has been one small attempt to imagine what time looks like from one fixed point.
We hope it inspired curiosity.
