Forbidden Maps Show Civilizations That Shouldn't Exist

10 ancient maps. All of them showing places. Several of those places no longer exist.

The Piri Reis Map was drawn in 1513 from older sources the admiral assembled over his career. Its southern coastline matches the subglacial terrain of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica — the bedrock beneath two miles of ice. That coastline wasn't measured until 1957, when American and Soviet research teams used seismic reflection surveys to image it. A US Air Force cartographer compared the two in 1960 and confirmed the correspondence in writing. Someone surveyed Antarctica's coast when it was exposed. The ice that covers it reached its current extent around 4,000 BCE.

The Dulcert Portolan was drawn in 1339. Its longitudinal accuracy across the full span of the Mediterranean — from Gibraltar to the Turkish coast — averages less than half a degree of error. John Harrison's marine chronometer, the first technology capable of producing that accuracy at sea, was demonstrated in 1761. The chart is 422 years ahead of the instrument that should have been required to make it.

The Hadji Ahmed Map was drawn in 1559 and shows Asia and North America as a single connected landmass. Beringia — the land bridge between them — has been underwater for approximately 10,000 years. Vitus Bering wouldn't reach that region for another 170 years.

The pattern across all ten is the same. A map is drawn by a scholar who cites older sources he cannot fully name. The older sources cite sources older still. Follow the chain back and it ends at the Library of Alexandria, which burned. What survived is on the parchment. What produced it is ash.

The maps outlasted the civilization that made them. The civilization didn't leave anything else.
